Everyday lives

These pages exist so the everyday lives of the people who came before me do not flatten into a slogan.

They worked. Samuel Fellmann ran a mill in Waterloo. Simone Domilici loaded ships on the Brooklyn waterfront, then cut meat. Frances and Bettina Maiale went to work at a shirtwaist factory. William Dowling crossed from Dublin, served, and went home to the South Dublin Union. Mario Majale crossed more than once and went back to Mazara in between. Millers, longshoremen, butchers, dock tenants, Mennonite tenants, Seventh Day Baptists — named jobs on named streets.

Ancestry matters here because those ordinary days are the record. Titles and fake Mayflowers come off the page. What stays is the mill, the pier, the factory floor, and the questions we still cannot fill.

Dowling in Ireland is the Dictionary of American Family Names reading: a shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Ó Dúnlaing, a North Leinster name meaning “descendant of Dúnlang,” an early personal name. Patrick Woulfe (1923) lists the same stem — anglicized Dowling, O’Dowling, Doolin, Doolan — pronounced Ó Dúllaing. MacLysaght and Grenham place the main sept among the Seven Septs of Laois.
